A public sundial in technicolour

Marking time with light and colour

The Time Cone is a proposal for a public artwork and gathering place in Dudley. Light, shadow and refraction turn its sculptural form into a colour sundial, drawing on the historic processes and forms of the Black Country glass industry.

The proposal was conceived alongside public-space and seating improvements between Station Drive and the town centre. It would act as a local landmark and a point of orientation along that route.

A sundial that tells the time with colour

The cone combines solar timekeeping with refractive glass. As sunlight moves around it, the sculpture casts changing patterns of light and shadow. Two internal lenses can rotate, allowing the colour sundial to be calibrated and explored through play.
